The coaching carousel is officially spinning, with the Maryland Terrapins and head coach Mike Locksley mutually parting ways on Wednesday. They lost to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Saturday, falling to 2-5 and 0-5 against power conference opponents this season.
Locksley was in his eighth season as their head coach, going 39-54 overall and 17-52 in Big Ten games. They won three straight bowl games from 2021-23, but have not had a winning season since.
They are on a bye this week, but will return to action next week against the Illinois Fighting Illini, with co-defensive coordinator and associate head coach for defense, and cornerbacks coach Aazaar Abdul-Rahim being named the interim head coach.
Who is Maryland football interim coach Aazaar Abdul-Rahim?
Abdul-Rahim is from Washington, D.C., and joined
the Terrapins ahead of the 2024 season. It is his second stint with the program after he served as the defensive backs coach from 2016-17 and cornerbacks coach in 2018.
He left them for UConn, being named their defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. He spent just one season with them, being hired as Boston College's defensive backs coach in 2020. He steadily climbed the ranks at Boston College, serving as the associate head coach and defensive pass game coordinator in 2021 and 2022 before being named the co-defensive coordinator in 2023.
Abdul-Rahim played for San Diego State from 1997-99, having a brief career in the Arena Football League before getting into coaching in 2003.
