The West Virginia Mountaineers beat the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 31-24 in Week 1 of the 2026 college football season on Saturday, and on Monday they added a transfer safety. Former Georgia Bulldog JaCorey Thomas committed to them on Monday, according to On3's Pete Nakos and Hayes Fawcett.
Thomas spent the previous four seasons with the Bulldogs, playing in 47 games and making 11 starts. He was initially out of eligibility after the season and took part in a rookie minicamp with the Carolina Panthers. He never signed with them and decided to return to college, getting a temporary restraining order that granted him an extra year of eligibility and allowed him to enter the transfer portal.
His best season came in 2025, with him playing in all
14 of Georgia's games and making eight starts. He ended the year with 45 tackles, 1.0 tackle for loss, and 1.0 sack. He finished his time at Georgia with 63 tackles, 1.0 tackle for loss, 1.0 sack, and two pass breakups.
West Virginia is in its second year under head coach Rich Rodriguez and went 4-8 last year. It is his second stint with the Mountaineers after he went 60-26 as their head coach from 2001-07.
While Thomas has little time to learn the playbook, he does give them another experienced player on defense. West Virginia will return to action on Saturday when they host UT Martin.
