True freshman quarterback
Tommy Carr made his first start last week against the Indiana Hoosiers, with head coach Kyle Whittingham benching quarterback Bryce Underwood during their matchup against Penn State the week prior. Carr had 167 yards, no touchdowns, and an interception while leading the Wolverines' offense to just six points in a 13-6 overtime loss. Still, Whittingham will keep him on the saddle, announcing he will startagainst the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. While Carr wasn't amazing, Underwood has been way worse. The former top recruit in the country has just 924 yards, five touchdowns, and six interceptions on the season. He hasn't had a game in his career with 300+ yards or more than two touchdowns, and in the past two games against
Penn State and Minnesota, he's had 144 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions.
Carr is the younger brother of Notre Dame gunslinger C.J. Carr. While on Notre Dame's bye week, the older Carr watched his brother play in his first career start.
Tommy Carr has a tough defense to face in Rutgers. They're ranked 12th in the nation in points allowed per game, but they're 127th in yards allowed per game. If Carr isn't able to show more potential against Rutgers, Whittingham might go back to Underwood. For now, Carr gets the onus.
