UCLA will be bringing a veteran NFL signal-caller into the building for the 2026 season.
ESPN reported Monday night that former Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders and New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr will be joining the staff as a special advisor to new head coach Bob Chesney. Carr, a native of Bakersfield, California, who played at Fresno State, retired from the NFL in May 2025 after 11 seasons.
Now, the four-time Pro Bowler joins a staff that has brought a lot of excitement to Los Angeles after it led James Madison to a College Football Playoff appearance last season.
"We are excited to welcome Derek to our program," Chesney said in a release. "He has played the quarterback position at a high level for more than a decade, and his experience,
leadership and football knowledge will be an incredible resource for our coaching staff and student-athletes. What stands out most is his passion for the game and his commitment to developing young people. Derek will have a tremendous impact on our players and is a great addition to our program."
Carr also has a prior relationship with UCLA general manager Darrick Yray, who comes in from Florida State. Yray was an assistant at Fresno State during Carr's college playing career.
The Bruins struggled over the last two years under former coach DeShaun Foster, but they're hoping to make some noise in Year 1 under Chesney. Carr's addition brings some major football experience to the table and should aid in that goal.
