The No. 1 Miami Hurricanes received some devastating injury news before their game against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Top wide receiver and Heisman candidate Malachi Toney suffered an ankle injury in practice and will be out for at least four weeks, according to Pete Thamel of ESPN. Toney will require surgery, and the best-case scenario is that he can return later in the year.
Toney is eyeing a return in time for the College Football Playoff, which starts on Dec. 18-19. It's brutal news for the Hurricanes, who have soared to the No. 1 spot and an undefeated record thanks to the efforts of Toney. He has the second-most receptions (73), third-most yards (1,073), and second-most touchdowns (13) out of anyone in the nation. He's near the top
of Heisman ballots in the nation, along with his quarterback, Darian Mensah.
The Hurricanes are seven-point underdogs against 7-1 Notre Dame on the road. The Fighting Irish are seven spots lower in the CFP Rankings than they are in the AP Top 25. The game is potentially a must-win for Notre Dame, considering their fragile spot in the College Football Playoff and their remaining schedule, which includes no CFP-ranked teams (Boston College, SMU, Syracuse).
The Toney injury robs fans of a potential matchup for the ages against Notre Dame cornerback Leonard Moore. He's considered to be a top-five pick and the best corner in the 2027 NFL draft. He missed Notre Dame's Week 9 win against Navy, but he's expected to come back in this game.
Miami's remaining schedule, outside of Notre Dame, is against Duke, Virginia Tech, and Boston College as well. The games are all at home. They're going to have to keep their College Football Playoff hopes alive without Toney the rest of the way.
