One of the more anticipated non-conference matchups over the next several years has reportedly been canceled.
According to a report from the Athens Banner-Herald, the Georgia Bulldogs and Clemson Tigers will be canceling their four upcoming non-conference games, which were set to begin in 2029. The schools “mutually agreed to cancel” the games, according to a document signed by Georgia athletic director Josh Brooks and Clemson athletic director Graham Neff on March 12 that was obtained by the Athens Banner-Herald through an open records request on Monday.
These games were agreed to back in 2018 and 2019, and were set to be played on the campuses of both schools every year from 2029 to 2032, starting in Athens, and alternating every year.
The Bulldogs
and Tigers have a long history with each other, and Georgia has largely been dominant, winning 44 of the 66 matchups, with four ties included as well. The most recent matchup between the two schools came in 2024, a 34-3 win by Georgia in the Aflac Kickoff Game at the start of the season.
This cancellation falls in line with a trend we've been seeing across college football, where high-profile teams shy away from scheduling other top-ranked opponents in the preseason, as it hurts their case to make the College Football Playoff at the end of the year with a potential loss on the schedule. Rather, teams are choosing to schedule non-conference games against small schools, using them as tune-up opportunities without putting their postseason chances at risk.
