We're a long way removed from 2006, but West Virginia fans are hoping that head coach Rich Rodriguez can turn back the clock in his second stint with the Mountaineers. Rodriguez had West Virginia near the top of college football two decades ago, but face stiff competition in the Big 12 to get back to that level.
West Virginia finished 4-8 overall and 2-7 in the Big 12 a year ago, and would like to get things started with a win at home against Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers finished with a winning record in Sun Belt play last year, but dropped their last four games of the season. The slide paved the way for new head coach Ryan Beard's arrival in 2026.

Coastal Carolina vs. West Virginia prediction, pick:
West Virginia's issues last season could essentially be summed up in one word: passing. The Mountaineers finished second to last in the Big 12 in passing yards, and finished second to last in the conference in passing yards allowed.
Rodriguez has been coy about who will get the nod under center for the Mountaineers, but Oklahoma transfer Michael Hawkins Jr. is expected to be the starter. He played nine games over two seasons for the Sooners, and it's hard to know exactly how he'll fare for West Virginia or if he'll have a lot of leeway for mistakes.
Beard has been equally as mysterious about who will get the start for the Chanticleers under center, but the eventual starter could have a decent opportunity to make plays if the Mountaineers' passing defense has not improved.
Given the uncertainty around both schools, the Mountaineers should win, but offensive fireworks may be limited in this one.
