Notre Dame has suffered a couple of injuries at fall camp that will likely hold the affected players out for part of the 2026 season.

ESPN reported Wednesday that Fighting Irish offensive lineman Matty Augustine (toe) and cornerback Chaz Smith (wrist) are set to undergo surgery. Neither injury is expected to be season-ending, and both should return to the field later this season.

Augustine, who appeared in three games as a true freshman last season, was competing for a starting spot at right guard on the offensive line. Sullivan Absher and Charles Jagusah were also competing for the job, with the latter making his return after a UTV accident last summer cost him the 2025 season.

Smith is a true freshman and former three-star recruit from Knoxville,

Tennessee, and he was not expected to see a major role this fall on a cornerback unit that returns All-American Leonard Moore and adds veteran transfer DJ McKinney.
