The New York Jets traded for nose tackle T'Vondre Sweat this offseason by sending Jermaine Johnson II to the Tennessee Titans.
Sweat is an ascending player who still has two years left on his team-friendly rookie contract. With the defensive tackle market exploding around the league this offseason, the Jets' trade continues to age well.
It started when the Titans signed Sweat's former teammate Jeffery Simmons to a three-year extension worth $105.8 million, with $100 million in guarantees, paying him a then-league-high $35.2 million per year. Well, that contract, reported on June 19th, is already old news.
On Tuesday, the Philadelphia Eagles agreed to a four-year, $152 million extension worth up to $160 million with defensive tackle Jalen Carter.
Carter's extension includes $106 million guaranteed and makes Simmons the second-highest paid interior defender in the NFL. Carter will now earn a position-record $38 million per season.
Sweat hasn't reached the heights of Simmons and Carter, but he's consistently been one of Pro Football Focus' top-20 ranked defensive tackles in the league. He needs to stay healthy and motivated to take the next steps, but the market says the Jets got a bargain. It's nice to see the Jets have a young stud on a rookie contract while other teams are shelling out nearly $40 million per season at the same position.
