The New York Jets got their first taste of preseason action last week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, knocking some of the rust off and giving fans their first extended look at head coach Aaron Glenn's roster. While the final score did not matter, the game provided valuable clues about several ongoing competitions that could shape the back half of the depth chart.
The evaluation process continues Friday when the Jets visit thePittsburgh Steeler in Week 2 of the preseason. Per report, Geno Smith is expected to start, but no one knows how long he'll play. With many starters expected to see limited action, the spotlight will once again shift to backups, young players, and roster hopefuls fighting to make an impression before final cuts arrive.
With that, here are Jets Wire's three position battles to watch during Week 2 of the preseason:
Jets secondary
Several Jets defensive backs remain locked in battles for roster spots, reserve roles, and special teams responsibilities. The Steelers will test the group's communication, discipline, and ability to create takeaways. A strong night from the secondary could help solidify depth behind the projected starters while giving the coaching staff more confidence in its young defensive backs.
At cornerback, names to watch include Azareye'h Thomas, Nashon Wright and Brandon Stephens. Unfortunately, standout Mory Bamba against the Buccaneers, will be out because of injury.
Cade Klubnik vs. Bailey Zappe
Klubnik strengthened his holdon the backup quarterback job during the preseason opener, displaying poise and command while moving the offense efficiently. The rookie looked increasingly comfortable as the game progressed, reinforcing the belief that he is trending in the right direction.
Zappe, meanwhile, experienced a much rougher evening. The veteran entered camp with a legitimate opportunity to push for the No. 2 role but now finds himself needing a strong response. Another solid performance from Klubnik could widen the gap, while a bounce-back effort from Zappe would keep the competition alive heading into the final stretch of the preseason.
David Bailey vs. Joseph Ossai
The battle in the trenches may ultimately tell the story of the game. The Jets generated only one sack against Tampa Bay, though it was an impressive play that featured rookie edge rusher Bailey helping create the pressure leading to a Will McDonald sack.
Pass-rush production has been a major talking point around the Jets for months. The organization invested significant resources into improving the front seven, including signing Ossai this offseason. Ossai started training camp injured and during that same time Bailey stood out.
Both will land on the 53-man roster, but who could start and see more playing time during the regular season will be determined in the preseason.
