The quarterback position is perhaps the most scrutinized job in professional sports. Playing it in the nation's largest media market only magnifies the attention. When the New York Jets unveiled their initial 53-man roster on Sunday, simple math seemed to reveal the answer.
The team kept only two quarterbacks: veteran starter Geno Smith and rookie Cade Klubnik. Even so, head coach Aaron Glenn removed any lingering doubt Monday. While speaking with reporters, Glenn was asked whether the Jets viewed Klubnik as their backup quarterback or if they planned to continue exploring alternatives. His answer was straightforward.
"He's our backup quarterback, and he'll do a good job."
That confirmation officially ends a summer-long competition that included
Bailey Zappe and Brady Cook. Neither veteran was able to overtake the rookie, and both are now off the active roster as the Jets prepare for Week 1.
Glenn was also asked whether the organization could still look to add another quarterback. Rather than focusing solely on the position, he emphasized the broader philosophy of improving the roster whenever opportunities present themselves.
"Yeah, we're looking at adding good players. If there's another guy out there that we feel can help this team. ('Mouge' (Jets General Manager Darren Mougey)and I] will have a conversation and see how that goes."
That approach makes sense. NFL rosters are constantly evolving, and the Jets will continue evaluating talent at every position. However, Glenn's comments made one thing clear: Klubnik has earned the trust of the coaching staff.
The fourth-round pick completed 21 of 34 passes for 190 yards with one interception during the preseason while receiving the bulk of the backup reps throughout training camp and exhibition play. More importantly, he consistently stayed ahead of the competition when the Jets evaluated the position as a whole.
Klubnik's preseason numbers won't guarantee future success, but they were good enough to convince the Jets that he is ready for the next step. With the regular season now approaching, the rookie enters Week 1 as the clear No. 2 quarterback behind Smith and one snap away from being thrust into the spotlight.
