The New York Jets signed running back Breece Hall to a contract extension earlier this offseason. Negotiations were successful after the Jets initially slapped him with the franchise tag. Recent extensions for running backs around the league prove GM Darren Mougey got a great deal with Hall's extension.
Hall's extension with the Jets was a three-year, $43.5 million agreement. It pays Hall an average of $14.5 million per season. It seems Mougey negotiated this deal with perfect timing, a little before the market exploded for running backs around the league.
Earlier this week, the Atlanta Falcons signed superstar back Bijan Robinson to a three-year extension worth up to $75 million that instantly made him the highest-paid running back in NFL history.
Days later, the Indianapolis Colts signed Jonathan Taylor to a two-year, $44 million extension worth up to $47 million that includes $39 million guaranteed, per multiple reports. Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs is expected to sign a similar extension any day now.
Robinson tops all running backs with $22.2 million per season. That felt warranted for a budding superstar. But Taylor's extension with the Colts reportedly being worth $22 million per campaign came as a surprise. Does Taylor deserve to earn roughly $8 million more per year than Hall does?
The 27-year-old Taylor rushed for 1,585 yards last season. The younger, 25-year-old Hall had 1,065 rushing yards in 2025. Taylor has consistently been more productive, but he's older, and $8 million per season represents a significant difference.
Mougey displayed perfect timing when signing Hall to an extension before all this running back activity.
Another big running back deal: three-time Pro-Bowl RB Jonathan Taylor and the Colts reached agreement today on a two-year, $44 million extension worth up to $47 million that includes $39 million guaranteed, per @rapsheet and me.
