The New York Jets entered the 2026 season hoping to establish a defensive identity under Aaron Glenn. Through two games, the early returns suggest they have done exactly that.
The Jets are the number-one defense in the NFL in terms of yards allowed. They're second against the pass, having allowed 263 yards through two games (131.5 per contest). They're second vs. the run, having allowed 131 yards (65.5). They've allowed 30 points. That ties them for sixth (15 points per game).
Those numbers place New York among the league's elite defenses entering Week 3. While rankings can fluctuate significantly this early in the season, the Jets have consistently limited explosive plays, controlled the line of scrimmage, and forced opponents to work for every
yard. As a result, they find themselves near the top of virtually every major defensive category.

At first glance, the most impressive aspect of New York's start may be its balance. Some defenses excel against the run while struggling against the pass. Others can create pressure but surrender chunk plays. The Jets have been effective across the board, ranking near the top of the league against both phases of the offense.
There is still plenty of football left to play, and tougher challenges undoubtedly await. Maintaining top-tier defensive production over a 17-game season is considerably more difficult than doing it over two weeks. Opposing offenses will adjust, injuries will test depth, and consistency will become the ultimate measuring stick.
Still, the foundation is impossible to ignore. Aaron Glenn's game management has drawn criticism following the home-opening loss to the Green Bay Packers, but the defensive side of the ball appears to be a different story. Maybe calling plays is his superpower. Whether that success continues remains to be seen, but through two games the Jets have looked every bit like one of the NFL's best defensive teams. If Glenn's greatest strength is calling a defense, the early evidence suggests New York may have found a formula capable of carrying the team deep into the season.
