The New York Jets' offensive line really struggled in Sunday's Week 3 defeat to the Detroit Lions. Starting quarterback Geno Smith was sacked on a season-high five occasions. Left tackle Olu Fashanu had a career-worst day, and was at the forefront of the team's issues up front.
"It wasn't good enough," Fashanu said following the loss. "At the end of the day, my job is to keep Geno [Smith] up and I didn't do that today. All I can do is watch the film, look at what I did wrong and attack the next week."
Fashanu was credited with allowing six pressures and three sacks versus the Lions, according to Pro Football Focus. His PFF pass-blocking score was a lackluster 35.1. Fashanu now leads the NFL in sacks allowed (four), per TruMedia.
Last season, Fashanu
allowed six sacks on 634 pass-blocking snaps. The former Penn State standout has already allowed four QB takedowns on just 127 pass-pro reps this campaign. It's fair to say Fashanu is suffering from some early-season regression.
The Jets' starting five combined to allow 19 pressures, per Next Gen Stats. Josh Myers and Joe Tippmann were assigned blame for one sack apiece. Running back Braelon Allen also struggled in protection.
The Jets' offense needs Fashanu to sort through his struggles.
