New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn heads into Year 2 in a do-or-die situation.
After last year’s awful 3-14 record, emotions are running high among Jets nation and another bad start in 2026 could only make his seat as the head coach a five alarm fire.
While team owner Woody Johnson has put his confidence in Glenn for this year, he has a penchant for an itchy trigger finger to make changes if his team gets off to a bad start. Robert Saleh was fired five games into the 2024 season after starting out 2-3. Johnson is also aware that Glenn isn't exactly a well-liked coach among every fan and there was an argument to be made that he should have been fired after last year.
The Jets had a much more productive 2026 offseason compared to last year and
should be an improved team. The front office focused on adding veteran leadership to offset the youth on their roster.
New York added players who have plenty of familiarity with Glenn from his time with the Detroit Lions and New Orleans Saints. General manager Darren Mougey made sure to lock up running back Breece Hall and offensive lineman Joe Tippmann on contract extension as well as brining back an old friend in Geno Smith to be the starting quarterback.
The Jets used the draft to continue remaking the offense as well as select arguably the best pass rusher available in Texas Tech's David Bailey with the second-overall pick. The head coach is officially out of excuses and needs to take this team to the next level beginning this year.
But, Glenn is in a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” situation. If he doesn't get off to a great start, the buzzards will be circling. While a Week 1 game should never be considered a must-win, for Glenn, a loss to the Titans and former head coach Robert Saleh will infuriate this fan base and only reinforce the sentiment that he should have been fired after last season.
At the same time, what if Glenn shows major improvement and the team takes that step forward that everyone was hoping? Would this anger the fan base more because it would mean he sticks around for 2027 or would they embrace the improvement and be convinced he's the right man for the job? Not only do the Jets have over $100 million in cap space for next year, they also have three first-round picks in the 2027 NFL draft.
It's also highly likely that two of the top head coaches in the league who were fired after last season, Mike Tomlin and Sean McDermott, will be available and in high demand after taking this year off. While no one wants to stomach another losing season, it's definitely food for thought as the Jets are not only building a potentially strong future, but a strong roster in a great position to draft a franchise quarterback that Tomlin or McDermott would be very interested in coaching.
The 2026 season is shaping up to be a very entertaining year, on and off the field. The New York Jets, and especially Aaron Glenn, have zero margin for error.
Every mistake will be blown out of proportion. Every coaching decision will be second-guessed if it backfires. Every loss will only make Glenn’s seat hotter, knowing who is available to the team next year.
But, too many wins could mean missing out on a candidate like Tomlin or McDermott. It could also mean missing out on the franchise quarterback they want in what many are predicting to be a strong quarterback draft. The Jets, and especially Glenn, should not be actively trying to lose games. But, if the Jets only finish with seven wins, will that be enough to save him? If he returns for a third season and the team does not improve, it'll be another link in the chain of decisions that could backfire and make a frustrated fan base more irate.
Glenn deserved a second season to see if he can fix what’s broken.
But, he’s potentially walking into a buzzsaw where both winning or losing could frustrate the fan base that feeds off negativity.
This could be a season where overall improvement and wins under the current head coach could be treated like losses depending on which side of the fence you sit on regarding Glenn. He's a lame duck head coach with a very high bar to clear in his second season.
The only way to fix it is by winning.
But, with a fan base that adopts an "only happy when miserable" attitude most of the time, even winning may not be enough to keep him when they know there are better options on the horizon.
