The New York Jets are searching for answers on defense, and some fans believe a personnel change could help.
With head coach Aaron Glenn's unit struggling to consistently get stops, attention has turned to second-round rookie cornerback D'Angelo Ponds.
Ponds was selected 50th overall at the 2026 NFL Draft, but his opportunities have been limited. After missing the first two games, he has appeared in six contests, totaling 64 defensive snaps and 15 special teams snaps.
For a team looking for ways to improve, that limited workload has naturally generated questions about when the young cornerback might see more action. Glenn addressed the situation while speaking to the media on Wednesday, making it clear that Ponds remains part of the team's plans.
The Jets head coach also offered a message to those eager to see the cornerback on the field: patience.
"We can only play so many people. You see that across the league a number of hot picks... [Fernando] Mendoza hasn’t played at all. We have some other good players on the team. He’s going to get his shot. He’s a damn good player. We all know that. Just be patient, and give him a little time. He’s going to get a shot to play," Glenn said.
Glenn's reference to No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza underscores that draft position doesn't automatically translate into an immediate role. Coaches have to make decisions based on their personnel, weekly matchups, and who they believe gives the team the best chance to win. That doesn't necessarily mean Ponds has fallen out of favor.
Still, there is a case for finding him more opportunities. Ponds played 18 defensive snaps against the Chicago Bears, 11 against the New England Patriots, and 30 against the Miami Dolphins. His workload has fluctuated, but in that game against the Dolphins, he showed that the coaching staff is willing to give him a more substantial opportunity.
The Jets aren't obligated to rush Ponds into a bigger role simply because fans are asking for it. However, with the defense looking for answers, Glenn's promise that the cornerback will get his chance is something worth watching. The question now is when that opportunity arrives and what Ponds does with it.
