The New York Jets won't know the true value of their 2026 draft class for several years. Still, the early returns continue to generate optimism, and the Jets are earning praise from outside the organization before training camp even begins.
In a recent re-ranking of all 32 NFL draft classes on Sports Illustrated's platform, New York landed at No. 3 overall. Only the Cleveland Brownsand Baltimore Ravens finished higher, while every other AFC East team trailed the Jets. The Buffalo Bills, the Miami Dolphins, and the New England Patriots checked in with rankings of ninth, 12th, and 25th, respectively.
It's easy to understand why the Jets graded so well. General manager Darren Mougey entered the draft with an opportunity to reshape the roster, and he did
exactly that by making three first-round selections. SI highlighted edge rusher David Bailey, tight end Kenyon Sadiq and wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. as the headliners of the class.
Each addresses a position of long-term importance while also possessing the upside to become a foundational piece. The publication also singled out second-round defensive back D'Angelo Ponds, praising both his high football IQ and infectious energy despite concerns about his size.
Of course, favorable draft grades don't guarantee future success. Every rookie must still prove himself once the pads come on. Even so, receiving this type of recognition before training camp reinforces the direction the Jets appear to be heading under Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn.
The rankings won't matter once the regular season begins. If Bailey develops into a disruptive pass rusher, Sadiq becomes the playmaking tight end the offense has lacked, Cooper emerges as a reliable receiving weapon, and Ponds outplays expectations, this draft class could eventually justify every bit of the praise it's receiving today.
