Geno Smith has some familiarity with the defensive mind he'll face Sunday when the New York Jetsvisit theKansas City Chiefs. Before their paths crossed again as opponents, Smith and Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo spent a season together with the other football team in New York.
That connection dates to 2017, when Spagnuolo served as the New York Giants' defensive coordinator before taking over as interim head coach late in the season. Smith was also part of that organization, allowing the quarterback to see firsthand how Spagnuolo approaches the game.
Speaking with reporters Wednesday, Smith reflected on that experience and praised the longtime defensive coach. He knows the challenges Spagnuolo can create for opposing quarterbacks,
particularly with the variety of looks his defenses present.
"Obviously, we were together on the Giants for one year. He's a guy who's going to present multiple looks. He's one of the best defensive coordinators this game has seen. He has those guys flying around and playing well. They have great guys on every level."

Smith knows Spagnuolo will present plenty of challenges
Spagnuolo's ability to disguise coverages and create pressure will test Smith's recognition and decision-making. The Chiefs have talent throughout their defense, and Smith's comments suggest he understands that this won't be a matchup where the quarterback can afford to be careless with the football.
Their previous connection offers some familiarity, but Sunday will be about execution. Smith must find a way to solve a defense directed by someone he knows well.
That history gives Smith a useful reference point, but familiarity alone won't give the Jets an advantage. Against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, stalled possessions can quickly become costly. Smith must turn his understanding of Spagnuolo's approach into sustained drives and points if New York hopes to leave Kansas City with a victory.
