Aaron Glenn is focused on September, not August
Coach Glenn recently credited vice president of health and performance Dr. Nic Gill for helping shape his offseason approach. He says the organization has spent considerable time discussing how to ensure players are performing at their highest level when the regular season begins.
Rather than asking veterans to push through unnecessary workloads, the Jets want them fresh enough to maximize the reps they do take. That same patience extends beyond workload management.
Glenn has resisted making premature declarations about position battles, allowing competitions to develop naturally while encouraging young players to learn through repetition instead of judging them by a single impressive practice or one difficult afternoon. Whether it's evaluating the offensive line, allowing rookie contributors to grow into larger roles, or carefully managing injured players returning to action, the emphasis has remained remarkably consistent.
It's a philosophy rooted in discipline instead of emotion. Training camp has a way of encouraging overreactions. One spectacular catch can create hype. One poor practice can spark concern. Glenn has repeatedly shown he isn't interested in either extreme.
The Jets aren't trying to build the league's best training camp team. They're trying to build one that's healthy, confident and prepared when the standings begin to matter. If that means sacrificing a few August headlines in exchange for better football in September and beyond, Glenn appears more than willing to make that trade.
