The New York Jets underwent significant changes on the defensive line this offseason. General manager Darren Mougey drafted EDGE David Bailey at No. 2 overall in the 2026 NFL draft. Nose tackle T'Vondre Sweat was also acquired in a trade with the Tennessee Titans for Jermaine Johnson II.
The Jets also signed veteran pass rushers Kingsley Enagbare and Joseph Ossai in free agency.
With so much change, veteran defensive tackle Harrison Phillips does the selfless work in the trenches that should allow the rest of the defensive line to operate as needed. Phillips simply does the dirty work in the trenches by eating up space and taking on blockers, freeing up talented pass rushers to pin their ears back and get after the quarterback.
Phillips appeared
in all 17 contests for the Jets last season. The former Stanford standout registered 60 tackles in 2025. Pro Football Focus credited Phillips with 29 run stops and 11 quarterback pressures. He only missed three tackles all season long.
Phillips was the definition of consistency for the Jets in 2025. It's players like him that should allow pass rushers like Will McDonald IV and Bailey to have advantageous matchups in the pass-rushing game, stacking up numbers that earn them national appreciation.
Appreciate Phillips for what he does. Head coach Aaron Glenn certainly sees the value is his veteran defensive tackle.
