The New York Jets' tight end room has been one of the more intriguing position groups to monitor throughout training camp.
Jeremy Ruckert and Mason Taylor were two of the incumbents and important pieces of the offense. We've learned recently that first-round rookie Kenyon Sadiq remains on track to return in time for the regular season.
Behind them, any potential competition for roster spots remains very much alive.
That is where Jelani Woods enters the conversation.
The veteran tight end has quietly put together a strong summer, taking advantage of the additional opportunities created by injuries and roster absences. Coaches have praised his work. Teammates have noticed his progress, and his performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers offered another
reminder of why he remains firmly in the roster conversation.
Jelani Woods has embraced every opportunity
Woods' only reception of the night during the second preseason game resulted in a touchdown. Rather than focus on snap counts or where he sits on the depth chart, Woods has consistently emphasized a simple approach.
"I will never complain about being on the field. Every day you get a new opportunity to take a next step forward to getting better. I feel like I'm doing that and I want to keep it up," Woods said.

NFL Network's Training Camp Live visited a Jets practice recently. Woods was a guest. There, he delivered a similar message during his appearance.
"My big thing is executing and, you know, just executing and putting my best foot forward, working hard. So, like I said, whatever they ask me to do, that's my thing. I'm going to get it done."
That mindset has helped Woods stay relevant in a crowded competition. The challenge now is turning a productive summer into a roster spot. With Sadiq expected back for the regular season and Ruckert and Taylor already positioned prominently in the rotation.
Woods may be battling for what could be the final tight end spot on the roster. Jets Wire'srecent 53-man roster projection lists him as a potential add, as New York carries four tight ends.
Undrafted rookies Chase Curtis and Connor Hulstein are also competing for opportunities. That makes Friday night's preseason finale particularly important.
Woods has already shown he can capitalize on opportunities when they come his way. One more strong performance could strengthen the argument that the Jets should carry four tight ends instead of three. If that happens, Woods may have done enough to force the coaching staff into a difficult decision.
