The New York Jets have provided us with the latest look at quarterback Geno Smith after a surprising few days.
On Friday, the Jets lost their preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 24-16, but that contest took place without Smith.
The Wednesday prior to the game the Jets and Bucs had a second joint practice in New York. Smith was reportedly injured during it and his ankle was too sore to play in the exhibition game, causing the team to start fourth-round rookie Cade Klubnik at quarterback instead.
A few days later on Monday, the Jets had Smith back at practice:
The 35-year-old suiting up for that session is a good sign. Clearly he does not have a serious injury.
However, ESPN provided this post-practice note:
QB Geno Smith was on the field,
taking his full share of reps, but he was favoring his left ankle -- an injury that occurred Wednesday and kept him out of the preseason opener Friday.
The Jets' next preseason contest is once again on Friday this upcoming week at the Pittsburgh Steelers. Smith's injury status will need to be monitored throughout the coming days considering it was noticeable to onlookers that he is still hurt to some extent.
Jets Wire will continue to provide updates throughout the 2026 NFL season.
