The New York Jetsselected David Bailey because they believed he could pressure opposing quarterbacks. Through the opening days of training camp, he's already flashed the pass-rushing abilitythat made him the No. 2 overall pick.
The rookie is aiming higher.
He believes his impact should extend well beyond getting after the quarterback. Bailey explained that while he understands why the Jets selected him, he has bigger aspirations for his role within the organization.
"Obviously, they selected me for my pass-rushing ability, but I also want to be able to bring a lot of energy to the team," Bailey said:
Bailey's comments reflect a maturity that has become evident throughout training camp. While his quick first step and ability to disrupt plays have
drawn attention, teammates have also taken notice of the competitiveness he brings to every practice.
Second-year offensive tackle Armand Membou has experienced that firsthand during their daily battles. He too spoke with the media and had nothing but glowing praise for his teammate/sparring partner.
"It's been a pain, man," Membou said with a smile. "He's a great player. He's just smooth. He's quick. He's got a natural ability to rush the passer. It's been a good matchup going against him."
Those one-on-one matchups have quickly become one of the highlights of Jets camp. They're certain to help sharpen two young players the organization expects to build around for years to come.
