New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn defended his team's decision to go for it on fourth-and-1 against the Green Bay Packers last week which became a lightning rod of attention because the try failed.
Now offensive coordinator Frank Reich has, too.
Originally following the 20-17 loss, Glenn backed it and took responsibility.
“I just felt like it was the right decision to do at that point. And we actually wanted to play for overtime when it came to that, Glenn said.
Now Reich has spoken out for the first time on the moment as the OC does not speak until Thursday each week. Pointing toward the analytics being in his team's favor at that time, Reich also supported going for it in that moment despite it backfiring.
“So, the gun run’s actually better,”
Reich said. “And the reason it’s better, percentage-wise, over a five-year period is because there’s a threat of a pass and they (the defense) don’t get so tight. We had that perspective going in.”
“Now, trust me, we’re going to throw it on fourth-and-1 some,” Reich added. “Maybe this week, maybe not."
