The New York Jets have made their quarterback hierarchy clear.
Geno Smith is the starter, rookie Cade Klubnikis the backup. Evaluations could continue as we navigate the NFL's regular season.
New York head coach Aaron Glenn confirmed as much after the Jets unveiled their initial 53-man roster, ending any lingering questions about where the rookie fourth-round QB stood heading into Week 1. That doesn't mean questions about Klubnik's future have disappeared.
In ESPN's 2026 rookie guide, insider Dan Graziano identified a scenario in which the former Clemson quarterback could eventually find himself in the starting lineup.
The formula wasn't particularly complicated. Frankly, it was pretty straightforward, a theory most who are paying attention would
agree with.
"Klubnik is a fourth-round pick who opens on the bench behind a starter who clearly isn't the team's future. If the Jets fall out of contention and/or Geno Smith struggles, Klubnik could get a late-season look."
It's a logical assessment. The Jets didn't draft Klubnik to sit behind Smith forever, but the hope is he won't have to play this season. While the veteran gives New York a stabilizing presence at quarterback, he also turns 36 this season and was never viewed as a long-term solution.
Klubnik, meanwhile, spent the summer battling Bailey Zappe for the backup role before ultimately winning the job. The rookie's preseason statistics were modest, but the Jets clearly saw enough development, command, and upside to trust him as Smith's primary backup entering the season.
Of course, the Jets hope this scenario never becomes relevant. If Smith plays well and New York remains in playoff contention, there would be little reason to make a change.
If the season goes sideways, Klubnik could become one of the most intriguing storylines to watch during the final weeks of the year. For now, the rookie's job is simple: continue developing and be ready if his number is called.
