The New York Jets finally have a victory and some momentum to build on, but their Week 6 assignmentoffers little room for complacency.
After escaping their most recent game against theCleveland Browns with a 17-12 win, head coach Aaron Glenn's team heads to Foxborough to face a New England Patriotsoffense that has found its rhythm at an important point in the season.
New York has the defensive talent to make this a difficult afternoon for Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, but the Jets (2-3) must also address the offensive issues that have kept them from consistently controlling games.
With that, here are Jets Wire's five keys to victory against the Patriots (3-2):
Pressure Maye without giving him easy answers
Maye is coming off a spectacular performance against the Las Vegas Raiders, throwing
for 374 yards and four touchdowns while adding a rushing score in New England's 45-17 victory. The Jets will need to disrupt his timing before he can exploit their coverage, particularly with David Bailey leading a pass rush that recorded eight sacks against Cleveland.
The challenge is turning pressure into consequential plays rather than allowing Maye to escape trouble and extend possessions. New York must maintain disciplined rush lanes, keep the quarterback contained, and make him earn his opportunities through tight coverage. Maye is tied for the NFL lead with seven interceptions so far this season, so New York's defense may have some opportunity.
Protect Geno Smith and give the offense room to operate
Quarterback Geno Smith has taken eight sacks over the past two games, an alarming trend heading into a matchup against a Patriots defense capable of making quarterbacks uncomfortable. New York cannot afford to let pressure dictate the offense's rhythm, particularly if it falls behind and becomes more predictable.
The offensive line must communicate effectively, while the running backs need to recognize blitzes and provide reliable help in protection. Giving Smith enough time to find receiver Garrett Wilson and his other targets would help the Jets sustain drives and take advantage of scoring opportunities.
Make Braelon Allen's production count
Braelon Allen's performance against Cleveland offered a glimpse of how the Jets can create balance when the running game is productive. However, New England presents a tougher challenge on the ground, allowing just 90.8 rushing yards per game through five weeks, the sixth-best mark in the league.
New York must find ways to keep Allen involved without becoming predictable. Mixing runs with quick passes and play-action concepts could force the Patriots to defend the entire field, rather than simply loading the box and daring Smith to beat them.
Take advantage of New England's secondary concerns
The Patriots entered the week dealing with several defensive backfield injuries. Carlton Davis III and Karon Prunty did not participate in Wednesday's practice, while Christian Gonzalez was limited as he worked toward a potential return.
New York should test the secondary early, particularly through Wilson, who has demonstrated his ability to create explosive plays. Even if Gonzalez returns, the Jets need to identify favorable matchups, move Wilson around the formation, and avoid allowing New England to dictate where the ball goes.
Stop giving away possessions and opportunities
The Jets cannot afford another afternoon of self-inflicted mistakes. They committed ten penalties for 102 yards against Cleveland and also struggled with ball security, problems that could quickly swing a divisional matchup against an offense capable of generating points in bunches.
Discipline must extend beyond avoiding flags. New York needs to secure the football, finish drives, and avoid turning promising possessions into empty trips. The defense can keep the Jets competitive, but repeatedly forcing it to overcome offensive mistakes is an unsustainable way to win.
The bottom line
The Jets have an opportunity to build on their victory over Cleveland, but beating New England will require a more complete performance. Generating pressure on Maye, protecting Smith, and finding a balanced offensive approach would help New York control the game's tempo rather than spending another afternoon reacting to its opponent.
The defense has shown it can change a game, and Allen has given the offense a potential foundation to build around. Now the Jets must pair those strengths with better execution and ball security if they hope to leave Foxborough with a divisional victory.
