When the New York Jets traded for Minkah Fitzpatrick, they did not simply adding another accomplished veteran to their secondary. The team brought in a player whose career has been defined by creating turnovers.
Fitzpatrick knows exactly what a strong defense looks like. He made that point again explaining that he's eager to bring his experience and playmaking ability to New York:

It didn't take long for him to make his impression felt. Two days later, he backed up those words.
During theJets' first padded practice of training camp, Fitzpatrick intercepted Geno Smith's first pass
in 11-on-11 drills, providing an early reminder of the instincts that have produced 21 career interceptions since entering the league in 2018.

Fitzpatrick's takeaway wasn't simply that he recorded an interception in practice. It was what that play represented for a defense desperate to change its identity. Last season, the Jets became the first team in NFL history to complete an entire season without recording an interception.
Head coach Aaron Glenn believes Fitzpatrick offers much more than takeaways. His talk with media members was another of the day's highlights.
“He’s a pro’s pro, first and foremost. The way that he operates in the meeting room is like no other. He’s not a very boisterous guy.," Glenn said. "That's not who he is. He’s more reserved, but he understands how to lead, and he understands how to pull a guy to the side and talk with him. He’s extremely smart, he loves football, and as a safety, that’s what you’re looking for. Listen, I’ve had some good safeties in my career, and early on, I like exactly where he’s at.”
One training camp interception won't erase last season's history, but it does reinforce why the Jets invested in Fitzpatrick. If his playmaking ability carries into the regular season, New York may finally have the type of defensive difference-maker capable of ending one of the NFL's most remarkable statistical droughts.
