You don't need to worry about whether Minkah Fitzpatrick is on board. The New York Jets safety apparently didn't appreciate the attention surrounding some postgame comments of his.
A phrase that gained traction after Sunday's loss to the Las Vegas Raiders was apparently misunderstood, and he believes the context of his remarks should have made his message clear.
Initially, it was reported that Fitzpatrick said the comment "Jets being Jets" after the 38-33 loss to the Raiders.
Fitzpatrick reiterated that he said the Jets were "beating Jets," referring to the penalties, mistakes and other self-inflicted problems that have repeatedly undermined the team's efforts. The distinction matters to him, particularly with the team trying to find answers after
another disappointing performance.
"It hasn't really caused any stir within this locker room. That's the most important thing. Everyone in this locker room knew what I was talking about," Fitzpatrick said.
His frustration was less about the public interpretation of his words and more about the possibility of the controversy becoming a distraction. At 2-6 and coming off three consecutive losses, the Jets have considerably more pressing concerns than debating what one player said after a game.
"I know what I said. It doesn't matter. We're playing Kansas City this week. … This locker room needs to focus on winning right now — and not something that I might have not said or something I might have done. Our focus and objective now is to win and not focus on should've, would've, could've," Fitzpatrick said.
The clarification should put the wording debate to rest, but the underlying issue remains. The Jets need to stop giving opponents extra opportunities through their own mistakes. Fitzpatrick wasn't describing some mysterious organizational curse; he was pointing to a problem the team has to fix if it hopes to change the direction of its season.
