The New York Jets have no shortage of intriguing storylines entering training camp. From head coach Aaron Glenn continuing to establish his culture to the development of young playmakers on both sides of the ball, there will be plenty for fans and media to monitor over the coming weeks.
But if you ask ESPN, one player stands above the rest. Appearing on CBS New York with Steve Overmyer, Cimini was asked about whose training camp he viewed as being the most important. His answer came without hesitation.
The spotlight naturally falls on Geno Smith
Cimini's comments shouldn't come as much of a surprise. Quarterbacks often dictate how a season is remembered, particularly for teams looking to rebound from disappointing campaigns. Fair or not, every other storyline tends to take a backseat when
uncertainty exists under center. That's the challenge Geno Smith inherits.
The Jets didn't bring back the veteran simply to provide stability. They brought him in believing he can elevate an offense that struggled to find consistency a season ago. Whether it's establishing chemistry with Garrett Wilson, incorporating newcomers like Omar Cooper Jr. and Kenyon Sadiq or helping Frank Reich implement his offense, much of New York's success will begin with Smith's play.
Improvement for the Jets starts under center
The Jets have spent the offseason adding talent across the roster. The offensive line appears deeper, the receiving corps has more upside and the defense added experienced veterans to complement an already talented group. Those improvements matter. Still, as Cimini suggested, none of them will mean much if the quarterback position fails to take a meaningful step forward.
That doesn't mean Smith has to produce an MVP-caliber season or carry the offense every Sunday. It simply means the Jets need more consistency than they received a year ago. Training camp won't answer every question surrounding the offense, but it will provide the first opportunity for Smith to demonstrate that New York is headed in a different direction.
If Cimini is right, the Jets' most important position battle isn't really a battle at all. It's about whether their new starting quarterback can convince teammates, coaches and fans that 2026 won't resemble the season they all want to leave behind.
