The New York Jets were defeated 24-16 by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 1 of the NFL preseason. Results don't matter in the preseason.
Exhibition games provide us with a fantastic opportunity to assess the rookie class. For the Jets, that starts with No. 2 overall pick David Bailey.
Bailey totaled just eight defensive snaps versus the Bucs. Head coach Aaron Glenn clearly didn't want to risk overly exposing his second overall selection in a meaningless preseason game. Bailey was credited with making one tackle, but the tape was a fun watch.
Bailey looked fast and explosive on his pass-rushing snaps.
Pro Football Focus credited him with generating one quarterback pressure. After dominating the Buccaneers' offensive line in a joint practice earlier
in the week, they respected Bailey during the game. Even with their backups in the game, they routinely double teamed and chipped the Jets' rookie pass rusher.
It was a promising, albeit quiet in-game debut for Bailey. The lack of live reps strongly indicates Coach Glenn and the Jets' coaching staff have strong confidence in his abilities and the progress he is making at training camp. Bailey flashed enough potential via a small sample size in his Jets preseason debut.
Jets Wire will continue to provide updates throughout the 206 NFL season.
