The New York Jets claimed two players off waivers on Monday. They added placekicker Blake Grupe and linebacker Trevin Wallace to the 53-man roster. The decision to not claim a quarterback means rookie Cade Klubnik will enter the 2026 season as Geno Smith's backup.
The Jets are only carrying the two quarterbacks on the active 53-man roster. That essentially guarantees Klubnik will play a notable role for the Jets throughout 2026.
Given that they are rebuilding, it is very likely that Klubnik starts a handful of contests this campaign.
The NFL universally agreed that quarterbacks were not worth claiming off waivers. Ironically, the only quarterback claimed was former Jets QB Brady Cook, who is joining the Miami Dolphins. The most intriguing quarterback,
Will Levis, went unclaimed.
Klubnik went 21-of-34 at quarterback throughout the preseason. The former Clemson standout threw for 197 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception. He often looked like a raw rookie quarterback with upside, but one who needs more seasoning.
The Jets have been thoroughly impressed by Klubnik this offseason. They are willing to endure the growing pains and welcome some bumps and bruises by officially making him the backup quarterback. Expect Klubnik to eventually play meaningful snaps for the Jets in 2026.
