Training camp is just around the corner for the New York Jets and each of the NFL's 32 franchises. Most rosters are largely set. That doesn't mean every question has been answered.
CBS Sports recently examined every AFC team's biggest remaining offseason priority
, and when he arrived at the New York Jets, he didn't point to quarterback. Instead, cornerback is identified as the roster's biggest area of concern entering the 2026 season.CBS Sports acknowledged that the Jets' season could quickly go sideways if QB Geno Smith doesn't rebound, but ultimately argued that the cornerback room possesses the roster's lowest floor.
With newly acquired Nahshon Wright locked into one starting role, the opposite side remains unsettled. CBS Sports noted that
New York needs Brandon Stephens, Azareye'h Thomas and/or Jarvis Brownlee Jr. to emerge as reliable contributors, but also mentions Wright's inconsistent NFL career.
If CBS Sports' assessment proves accurate, one of the Jets' most intriguing training camp competitions won't take place under center. It will unfold in the secondary. The Jets have invested heavily in strengthening their pass rush, offensive weapons, and overall roster depth this offseason.
Now they'll need someone opposite Wright to seize the opportunity before Week 1.
Whether it's Stephens, Thomas, Brownlee, or another contender, the winner of that battle could have a greater impact on New York's defensive success than many realize.
