The New York Jets are rebuilding the roster.
Veteran starting quarterback Geno Smith is being treated as a stopgap. The Jets reunited with Smith earlier this offseason to upgrade the quarterback play they received from Justin Fields in 2025.
Even though the Jets remain in the early stages of their roster makeover, there's hope that the offense will be effective. The offensive line particularly appears to be a strength, with Olu Fashanu and Armand Membou as ascending building blocks at offensive tackle. Guard Joe Tippmann is also an above-average starter with a shiny new contract extension.
One underrated factor about this Jets offensive line is that Smith will make them look better than Fields did last season.
Blocking for Fields is a difficult
assignment. His penchant for holding onto the football makes life difficult in pass protection.
Fields' average time to throw last season was 3.11 seconds, according to Pro Football Focus. That was sixth-longest in the league among 43 qualifying quarterbacks. By comparison, Smith got rid of the ball much quicker, with an average time of 2.82 seconds. Smith's release time tied for 18th-fastest in the NFL.
Smith also has a better offensive line with the Jets than he did with the Las Vegas Raiders last year.
The Jets' blocking unit will appreciate Smith's willingness to release the football quickly. It's going to make everyone better on offense.
