Former Georgia Bulldogs linebacker Monty Rice fell just short of making an NFL roster again. The Los Angeles Rams cut him in their first wave of final cuts, according to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. The Rams cut him to cut their roster down to 53 players by the deadline.
Rice was signed on Aug. 13, just a few weeks ago. He played in all three preseason games for the Rams, registering seven tackles and giving up just a 64.6 passer rating. However, he registered a poor 52.7 Pro Football Focus grade because he missed three tackles and registered just two stops, according to PFF (subscription needed).
Rice has had a wild ride in the NFL since he was selected in the third round of the 2021 NFL draft by the Tennessee Titans. He played as a fixture
on the Titans for three seasons. In 35 regular-season games, he totaled 128 tackles, five tackles for loss, no sacks and two passes defended. The Titans waived him on Dec. 5, 2023.
The New Orleans Saints claimed him off waivers a day later, but he was released in the Saints' final cuts on Aug. 27, 2024. The Atlanta Falcons signed Rice to their practice squad on Aug. 30, 2024, but released him on Oct. 21. The New England Patriots signed him to their practice squad on Nov. 5, 2024, and he was even promoted to the active roster on Jan. 5, 2025. He played in three games and recorded one tackle. Unfortunately, he was cut again in the team's final cuts on Aug. 22, 2025.
Rice signed with the Detroit Lions on Sept. 9, 2025, and he even earned some more NFL experience. He registered two tackles in their Week 2 win against the Chicago Bears, but the Lions released him a week later. In his career, Rice has 131 total tackles, five tackles for loss and two passes defended in the NFL.
Rice spent the 2017-20 seasons with the Georgia Bulldogs, where he totaled 219 tackles, 10 1/2 tackles for loss, two sacks, five passes defended, three forced fumbles, and a scoop-and-score in 2020 against the Tennessee Volunteers. He earned second-team All-SEC honors in 2019 and first-team All-SEC honors, along with second-team All-American honors, in 2020. It remains to be seen if he catches on to another NFL roster or practice squad.
