Georgia Bulldogs football took on the Auburn Tigers and lost 27-24 on a game-winning field goal. The Bulldogs had some late-game heroics but ultimately lost. Something to note is Georgia's second-quarter 54-yard field goal that they missed after Auburn blocked the attempt.
Bulldogs quarterback Gunner Stockton is also the team's field goal and extra point holder. Stockton and the field goal unit had to rush back on the field after thinking it was about to be a punt. Georgia missed the field goal that could have tied the game at 17 before halftime.
Georgia head coach Kirby Smart discussed the miscommunication on the field goal attempt.
"We do that every day at practice," Smart said. "We work that in terms of speeding things up and trying to make
sure we go quickly. Gunner (Stockton) thought we were punting and just came off the field because it was a little bit longer of a field goal, but I've never thought to burn the timeout for me because I don't really believe in burning timeouts when you need them for extra possessions.
"I regret using the timeout for the fourth-and-four with the hard count, but we felt like that one was worth it because the wind was in our face. The wind was with us on his kick, so we decided not to use it. We do have those hurried kicks in everyday practice, so I feel good about that."
Georgia kicker Peyton Woodring also had to aim at a lower trajectory on the long kick. The snap was a little high for Stockton as well. Woodring is now seven of nine on field goal attempts this season at 77.8%, but he's also perfect on extra points, 38 of 38. Georgia will need to be more consistent on special teams to keep them in games like that. The Bulldogs are on a bye week and will face Florida on Oct. 31.
