TheGeorgia Bulldogs had a big-time performance against the Alabama Crimson Tide in their college football showdown this past weekend. Georgia won the game 20-17 and is now the No. 1 team in the AP Poll top-25. Here are the winners and losers from the contest.
Winner: Georgia's run game
The combination of Georgia running backs Dwight Phillips Jr. and Bo Walker helped propel them to victory. Phillips had 17 carries for 120 yards. He constantly got them in position to score. Walker also contributed, carrying the ball 10 times for 69 yards. Running backs Nate Frazier and Chauncey Bowens were out with injuries, but the run game didn't cease to be productive.
Winner : Alabama QB Keelon Russell
Although the Tide lost, Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell had a good outing against the Bulldogs, going 16 of 30 for
185 yards and a touchdown. Russell was able to find open receivers. Nine different players had at least one reception. Russell was able to scramble as well, carrying the ball nine times for 41 yards. Alabama running back Trae'Shawn Brown had nine carries for 90 yards, which helped their offense.
Loser: Alabama offensive line
The usual stout Alabama offensive line didn't have that great a time against the Bulldogs. Russell was under constant duress, having to escape the pocket. They also gave up four sacks.
Loser: Georgia's special teams and fumbles
Georgia's special teams unit struggled a bit in the punt return game, fumbling near the opposite goal line from returner Sacovie White-Helton. But that's not where it stopped; Georgia fumbled three other times during the game, which were done by quarterback Gunner Stockton, running back Nick Peal, and safety Blake Stewart. Luckily, Georgia recovered all of their fumbles. Georgia can't count on that sort of fumble luck moving forward.
The Bulldogs will take on Auburn next on Saturday, October 17th.
