Former Georgia Bulldogs linebacker Chaz Chambliss is playing a new position in his second year in the NFL. The Minnesota Vikings played Chambliss at fullback in addition to outside linebacker this preseason.
Chambliss even recorded a catch as a fullback in preseason action. Chambliss' reception gave the Vikings a first down and drew a lot of excitement for a four-yard catch in the preseason.
"It's not something we would do with everybody," Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell said on Chambliss' position change. "But it's that guy, and the respect and love his teammates have for him, I think is what came out. It was a simple flat route, but he was pretty darn excited, and so was everyone else."
Chambliss versatility is a big factor in him making Minnesota's
53-man roster. He will still primarily be deployed as an outside linebacker, but he could see action in short yardage situations on offense.
The former undrafted player appears to have found a nice niche with the Vikings. Chambliss' position change means he needs to change jersey numbers as well. He is now wearing No. 32 with the Vikings, which is the same number he wore at Georgia.
Chambliss played some fullback in college, so the position is not entirely new to him. His position change means that Chambliss is having to attend both offensive and defensive meetings. Chambliss' teammates have been impressed with his dedication to the new position and it will be fun to see how it goes for him in the regular season.
