ATHENS, Ga. -- The Auburn Tigers stunned the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs on a last-second Alex McPherson field goal to win 27-24. The loss snapped Georgia's nine-game winning streak over Auburn and was the Tigers' first win in Athens since 2005.
Auburn's win came thanks to first-year head coach Alex Golesh. He brought his quarterback Byrum Brown over with him from South Florida. Brown finished with 265 total yards and two total touchdowns in Auburn's huge road win.
The upset win provides a major boost for the Tigers, who have had five straight seasons with seven losses. The Tigers have not won 10 games since 2017, but are off to an optimistic start to the Golesh era thanks to their win over Georgia.
Following the win, Golesh shared an emotional moment
with his son and explained what the win means for Auburn. Barrett (Golesh's son) asked his dad earlier in the week if he could go on the field after Auburn wins.
"We're on the field bro," Golesh said as he gave his son a hug. "I'm just grateful to our guys for just to continuing to just plug. You can have so many narratives, so many stories. I'm grateful to our guys, grateful to our coaches, our fan base. We've been through a lot. We're going to build Auburn back to where everybody wants it... one game at a time. Just hang with us.
"This locker room, these dudes who chose to stay. That's what it is all about. And it is pretty neat. I'm really proud of our guys."
Golesh shared that his is "grateful for everyone that has continued to stay with us" throughout Auburn's recent struggles. The upset win could be a turning point for Auburn, which needs some positive momentum after years of turmoil and just not quite being good enough to beat Georgia and/or Alabama.
