Playing football in Pittsburgh requires more than physical talent; it demands a specific mindset built for brutal, freezing late-season temperatures.
Former Pittsburgh Steelers pass rusher Bud Dupree
recently offered a vivid look into that uncompromising culture, revealing how veteran leaders Joey Porter Sr. and James Harrison strictly enforced an unwritten rule: no sleeves, no matter how cold it gets.Appearing on “Not Just Football with Cam Heyward,” Dupree recalled entering a locker room governed by hardened veterans who viewed long sleeves as a sign of weakness on winter game days.
"Peezy [Joey Porter Sr.] and James Harrison, you couldn't wear sleeves," Dupree shared. "If you wore sleeves, it was a fine. They were making you take them off in the warmups."
Heyward agreed with Dupree, saying he could remember the older guys' zero-tolerance policy on wearing sleeves in cold weather. He recalled a time when linebacker Ryan Shazier tried to wear sleeves out to warmups before a game.
“I remember a time where Ryan was trying to wear sleeves, and he was bitching and moaning about it and everyone was like, ‘Don’t you wear sleeves! We are gonna fight you if you wear sleeves!' We bullied him into not wearing sleeves, and then he started wearing no shirt to go out to the warm ups,” recalled Heyward with a laugh.
Dupree said he could relate. He said he remembered standing out on what was then Heinz Field, shirtless, snot running down his face, freezing.
“D-Line definitely couldn’t wear sleeves,” explained Dupree. “It was a fine. That’s something Peezy and James Harrison brought around, too. That was crazy, man. Not the fact that you couldn’t wear sleeves, not being able to, like it’s cold outside. The Miami game! It’s negative 12 degrees, you can’t wear sleeves.”
For young players joining the Steelers, shedding the sleeves served as a mandatory rite of passage into one of the NFL's most legendary, battle-tested locker room traditions.
