The Pittsburgh Steelers are one month into the NFL regular season and currently sit at 2-2. This is not how the team hoped to start the season with new head coach Mike McCarthy in charge and all these new players on both sides of the football. The problems on this roster, mixed with pending free agency make the current top needs in the 2027 NFL draft fairly straightforward. Obviously, the Joey Porter Jr. trade figures into this heavily.
Here are our updated needs for the draft.
1 - Wide receiver
Michael Pittman Jr. is looking like a bad trade and nothing we've seen so far tells us DK Metcalf is a true No. 1 in this offense. Pittsburgh needs a playmaker on the outside who can get separation, which is severely lacking. The top of this draft is stacked with prospects
and we would love to see Pittsburgh use one of their first two picks on a receiver.
2 - Cornerback
The trade of Joey Porter Jr. became a necessary evil but it leaves the Steelers in a tough spot. Jalen Ramsey is getting older and we have no idea if Daylen Everett is a full-time starter or not. Jamel Dean is only under contract through 2028. This could easily be the team's first-round pick if they don't continue the trend of adding veterans as opposed to drafting cornerback talent.
3 - Safety
The addition of Jaquan Brisker hasn't yielded the results we hoped for and while we are optimistic about Robert Spears-Jennings, he's still a seventh-round rookie. The safety class is a mixed bag but if a few underclassmen declare, there might be four guys off the board in the Top 50 picks.
4 - Guard
Pittsburgh had to pivot two games into the season and completely shuffle the right side of the offensive line. Unless Gennings Dunker comes off of IR and develops quickly to a starter, the team has to find a player to replace Brock Hoffman.
5 - Inside linebacker
We can't imagine a scenario where Patrick Queen is on the roster next season so we rank inside linebacker here with that in mind. In addition, we expect a move at outside linebacker that puts Nick Herbig back there,
6 - Running back
Rico Dowdle and Jaylen Warren are both in the final years of their contracts next season. We love what Warren is doing this season but he needs real help going forward, so we hope Pittsburgh goes rookie rather than free agent here.
7 - Quarterback
We included quarterback here because we know the Steelers will have a new starter in 2027. Will it be Will Howard or Drew Allar? No idea but if this season completely falls apart and the Steelers are somehow picking in the Top 10, they would have to be tempted.
