When defensive lineman Derrick Harmon suffered an injury, the Pittsburgh Steelers found themselves operating with an unusually thin five-man rotation upfront. Navigating that structural challenge required immediate production from deep on the depth chart, and veteran defensive tackle Cameron Heyward was quick to credit rookie interior lineman Gabe Rubio for answering the call.
On the latest episode of “Not Just Football with Cam Heyward,” the seven-time Pro Bowler highlighted how Rubio and Pittsburgh’s interior rotation held the line against the Indianapolis Colts. Playing in his first career NFL action, Rubio provided crucial snaps alongside veterans Keeanu Benton, Yahya Black, and Sebastian Joseph-Day.
"Gabe Rubio, first game played, and I'm
just happy to call him a teammate," Heyward said. "I thought he played a really good game. He played with strong hands, heavy hands, was disruptive and didn't look out of sorts."
For a rookie stepping into a high-stakes environment, avoiding fundamental breakdowns is half the battle. Heyward emphasized that young defensive linemen often struggle with the speed and physical demands of NFL trench play, but Rubio seamlessly integrated into the front seven's gap-control scheme.
"Sometimes when you get these rookies, it can take them a while to adjust, but I felt like he was able to step right in," Heyward explained. "We've only been playing with five D-linemen, so it's been a little bit different than years past because we've had to rely on everybody. Everybody's getting reps."
That elevated workload makes interior execution even more paramount. Rather than letting the rotation falter in Harmon’s absence, Pittsburgh’s defensive front delivered a disruptive performance that controlled the line of scrimmage. For Heyward, seeing a young teammate like Rubio step up under pressure reinforces the standard expected within Pittsburgh's defensive room, regardless of who is called upon.
