In the NFL, flashy passing plays dominate highlight reels, but championship caliber is earned in the trenches. Heading into their midseason bye week with an impressive 6-2 record, the Pittsburgh Steelers have quietly re-established an identity rooted in sheer physical dominance along both sides of the line of scrimmage.
On “The Snap Count” podcast, former Steelers offensive lineman Trai Essex and quarterback Charlie Batch laid out why Pittsburgh’s trench play isn't just improved; it has officially elevated the team into legitimate Super Bowl contention.
"We both know if you have a top five O line and a top five D line in November, December, and January, you are a contender," Essex emphasized. "No bones about it. No matter what going on with your
team, if you have that in place, you are a contender. They weren't top five to start the year. They are top five on both the O line and D line now as we stand on this bye-week."
The turnaround on the offensive line required patience. Early positional shuffling and rookie development created growing pains, but the insertion of Max Iheanachor alongside anchor Zach Frazier unlocked a dominant run game.
Meanwhile, the defensive front, led by enduring star Cameron Heyward, an ascending Keeanu Benton, and high-impact pass rushers T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith, has stifled opposing offenses, anchoring the league's third-ranked run defense.
"They've exceeded my expectations," Essex admitted when making his case for an overall 'A-minus' midseason grade. "I did not think we'd be sitting here 6-2 with a top five O line and a top five D line. For the first time in a long time, CB, I don't feel those lingering doubts like I felt about previous teams before. We have the right leadership in place and we have the right foundation in place to do some damage this year."
As the Steelers prepare for a grueling second-half schedule, their identity is no longer in question. By re-establishing control in the trenches on both sides of the ball, Pittsburgh has built a sustainable, physical framework capable of traveling anywhere in January.
