With the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Week 1 kickoff against the Atlanta Falcons looming, contract extension negotiations for standout cornerback Joey Porter Jr. have reached an apparent standstill. As market-setting deals for fellow 2023 cornerbacks Christian Gonzalez and Devon Witherspoon push top-tier corner pay toward $33M–$35M annually, Porter’s camp is seeking a contract that reflects his status as one of the league’s premier shutdown defenders.
On “The Snap Count,” former Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch and tackle Trai Essex broke down the financial reality and underlying leverage at play. Highlighting recent mega-extensions around the league, Essex noted that Porter’s agent holds strong market data.
"Yesterday, Christian Gonzalez signed an extension.
Four years, $133 million,” said Essex. “This is on the heels of Devon Witherspoon signing his extension. I know JPG. JPJ has to be like, 'Show me the money. Like, these cats is getting paid. And I was the one out here putting in work. I was the one that led the league in opposing quarterback pass rating when they were targeting me. I was the one that third in the league in passes defense.’"
While Porter’s elite production warrants top-dollar consideration, Batch emphasized that front office general manager Omar Khan maintains significant leverage via a franchise tag.
"The other thing that Joey has to be careful about is the fact that the Steelers do hold two cards. I know Joey could sit out, but he would have to return by Week 10 to get his free agency year. But the cards for next year will ultimately be your franchise tag, which is the top five salaries of each position, and also a transition tag. Which we know the Steelers have used the transition tag more than they did the franchise tag and the transition tag is top 10 at your salary."
With the team’s strict policy against in-season negotiations, both sides face a hard deadline before kickoff. Whether a deal gets finalized or carried into 2027 under tag control, the coming days will dictate Pittsburgh's long-term secondary structure.
