While the Pittsburgh Steelers secured a 20–13 victory over the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1, longtime defensive leader Cameron Heyward was far from satisfied with everything that transpired on the field.
Speaking on his podcast, “Not Just Football with Cam Heyward,” the veteran defensive lineman voiced extreme frustration over a defensive holding call whistled against Pittsburgh during a direct, downhill run play. Both Yahya Black and Derrick Harmon were flagged by officials for defensive holding on consecutive defensive drives within a span of just a few plays.
Unwilling to let the officiating crew off the hook, Heyward detailed how he directly confronted the head referee on the field to demand an explanation for a flag he considered completely
unjustified.
“I asked the ref about that during the game, and I thought that was a terrible call,” Heyward revealed. “Calling the defense for holding when it's a downhill play. I literally went to the ref. I was like, ‘What was wrong with that play? It was a double downhill.’”
According to Heyward, the official claimed the defender prevented an offensive lineman from climbing to the second level. Heyward quickly rejected that logic, pointing out that the play’s design moved straight down the middle, making second-level obstruction irrelevant.
“That makes no sense because it was all downhill,” Heyward said. “And I told the ref, I was like, ‘Next time I see you, give me the reason. I don't know when I'm going to get it, but please watch this game. tell me if you were right in calling that because I think it was a terrible call in that moment.’”
Though Pittsburgh’s defense held firm down the stretch to seal head coach Mike McCarthy’s first win with the franchise, Heyward’s postgame comments underscore his willingness to hold officials accountable when controversial penalties disrupt defensive momentum.
