On Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Steelers got back to work and this included speaking to the media. One player who addressed the media is cornerback Joey Porter Jr. who is in the midst of a contract debacle. As the clock runs out for Porter Jr. and the Steelers to get on the same page about a contract extension, Porter Jr. said plenty without saying much when asked about it.
I mean, I could hope and think all day," Porter said. "But it's really, it's up to those guys upstairs."
What Porter Jr. is implying is that it is the Steelers front office who is holding things up. Which isn't entirely true. Porter Jr. hasn't practiced all training camp and was on the PUP list. He's since been taken off the list and the expectation is that he practice before the team
is willing to start negotiations. A more than fair stance, by the way. Porter also gave the impression that he would leave it up to his agents if he plays or not. A risky move to be sure.
Porter Jr. also said his dad, Joey Porter Sr. has been advising on this whole situation.
"He's been giving me great advice," Porter Jr. said. "I can't say too much on what he's been saying to me, but he's been giving me great advice. He's been in my corner my whole life, so I wouldn't think he was steering me in the wrong direction."
Whether or not it is great advice will depend on whether or not a deal gets done. If that happens, all is forgiven and everything is right in the world. If not, Porter Jr. will have to decide (or let someone decide for him) if it is worth playing or not.
