Draft night often leaves NFL fan bases fixated on the names that slipped away. For Pittsburgh Steelers fans, missing out on a targeted top receiver when a rival swooped in felt like a gut punch. But seven weeks into the season, that draft-day heartbreak has transformed into a massive blessing in disguise.
Enter wide receiver Germie Bernard.
Rather than dwelling on missed prospects, Pittsburgh’s offense has flourished with Bernard emerging as the high-volume target Aaron Rodgers desperately needed. This has been especially true as the wide receiver room in the Steel City has struggled with injuries.
The dynamic was highlighted on “The Rich Eisen Show,” where Eisen pointed out how quickly draft-night hand-wringing faded once Bernard took the field.
"Oh, and by the way, that whole Makai Lemon moment where the Steelers were about to draft him, and the Eagles snaked him,” said Eisen. “Guess what? That kid's exactly what Rodgers needs cause Germie Bernard is turning into what I imagine the role that they wanted Lemon to play, right? And he’s great."
Bernard's instant chemistry with the future Hall of Fame quarterback became impossible to ignore during Pittsburgh's dramatic comeback victory over Tampa Bay, where he matched star receiver DK Metcalf with an 11-catch outburst.
"DK and Germie Bernard had 11 catches each in that win over the Buccaneers. That comeback win," added Eisen
Beyond the box score, Bernard's mental integration into the offense resembles a veteran who has spent years in Rodgers' system. On the sidelines, the young receiver is already actively involved in operational game planning, evoking memories of Rodgers' legendary back-shoulder connection with Jordy Nelson in Green Bay.
"There's DK and him and Bernard talking and Bernard's already just like seven games in talking to him like, you know, looking like he's leaning in and game planning like he's Jordy Nelson. You know what I mean?"
Seven weeks into his Steelers tenure, Bernard hasn't just filled a void, he has re-written Pittsburgh's offensive ceiling.
