Joey Porter Jr. is no longer with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Some couldn't wait to see him go, and others thought the move was completely unnecessary. Well, it appears the latter group may have had a point, as it didn't take long for the Porter trade to blow up in the Steelers' faces.
Heading into the Thursday Night Football game against the Browns, the Steelers' already thin secondary depth was a big concern. Jamel Dean has had a lingering ankle injury since Week 1, Jalen Ramsey was set to play with his wrist in a cast, and Asante Samuel Jr. was coming off his worst performance of the season.
Less than 24 hours after trading Porter, the Steelers saw Dean (ankle) ruled out after just 16 snaps in Week 4's matchup against the Cleveland Browns. This
left Samuel, third-round rookie Daylen Everette, and Ramsey, who wasn't at 100%, as the cornerback trio to finish the game. This obviously was far from a winning recipe, and the Browns offense, like many more teams to come, took full advantage of Porter no longer being a Steeler.
Cleveland quarterback Deshaun Watson finished the game with a season-high 268 passing yards against a weakened Steelers secondary that let Browns wide receivers like Denzel Boston and KC Concepcion make big plays throughout the game.
Pittsburgh should've seen this coming for a while and done everything they could to get Porter back onto the field. Instead, the team decided to permanently cut ties with one of the league's top man-coverage cornerbacks for pennies on the dollar.
