The Pittsburgh Steelers carry the highest-paid defense in the NFL, but the output on the field is failing to match the massive payroll. On his “Deebo & Joe” podcast, franchise icon James Harrison broke down the deep disconnect between Pittsburgh’s financial investment and its week-to-week execution, pointing to visible frustration among the team's veteran leaders.
Joined by his co-host and former teammate Joe Haden, Harrison emphasized that top-tier compensation brings elite expectations. When players fail to execute basic assignment football, the burden falls squarely on seasoned leaders to salvage the play.
"The way we're expecting them to be. Not top five, highest paid defense," Harrison said. "Cam [Heyward] on the sidelines screaming. T.J.
[Watt] on the sidelines screaming because they know what they're doing. This is not right. Y'all are in wrong positions. Y'all are not executing. Y'all are professionals. Y'all are the highest paid people because you do it at such a high level. This just doesn't look good. You not even in the right positions."
The lack of structural discipline has forced stars like T.J. Watt and Cameron Heyward into uncharacteristic roles during games. Harrison called out the alarming sight of star defenders taking matters into their own hands just to get proper play calls and adjustments on defense.
"When in your life have you ever seen T.J. grab the headsets to talk to DC [defensive coordinator Patrick Graham]?" Harrison asked. "Like, 'what's going on? Help me.'"
For a unit anchored by perennial Pro Bowlers, baseline positional errors, blown coverages, and soft run defense remain glaring issues. Harrison’s breakdown makes it clear that financial investment does not guarantee defensive dominance.
Until Pittsburgh corrects its basic alignment mistakes, the NFL's highest-paid defense will continue to yield the lowest-grade execution on game day.
