The Pittsburgh Steelers just lost out on a potential 2027 quarterback option, one that was frequently linked to the team as a possible successor to Aaron Rodgers in next year's free agency pool.

Mayfield, who was drafted by the Cleveland Browns with the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, played four seasons as an AFC North rival of the Steelers before being traded to the Carolina Panthers
in July 2022.
After being released by the Panthers in December 2022, Mayfield joined the Los Angeles Rams and was able to lead the team to a come-from-behind victory over the Las Vegas Raiders despite only having two days to learn the new playbook.
Mayfield's successful short-term stint with the Rams earned him a starting job with the Buccaneers, where he's rejuvenated his career. Although it's disappointing we won't get Mayfield in a Steelers jersey in 2027, the future is still bright, with Drew Allar likely set to receive a shot at the starting job when Rodgers retires.
