While national media and fan frustration remain fixed on the offensive unit's early struggles, Pittsburgh Steelers
veteran defensive tackle Cameron Heyward turns the spotlight inward. Following a disappointing 20-3 loss to the New England Patriots in Week 2, Heyward delivered a candid assessment of the defense, insisting that failure to consistently defend the run is quietly undermining the entire team.Despite recording sacks and takeaways, the Pittsburgh defense allowed crucial explosive plays on the ground, most notably long runs by TreVeyon Henderson, that broke open a low-scoring contest. Speaking on his “Not Just Football with Cam Heyward” podcast, the veteran leader rejected the notion that giving up just 13 defensive points tells the complete
story.
"Our performance on defense was not where it needs to be. I agree," Heyward said. "When you look at how we played, yes, we had turnovers. Yes, we had sacks. But there's about four or five plays even just explosive-wise where you can't have that and they just completely mess up your averages and everything."
Beyond the raw stats, Heyward stressed how critical run defense is to overall field position. Slipping up on early downs robs Pittsburgh of opportunities to force three-and-outs, depriving an already struggling offense of crucial short fields.
"I think what we can do more is one stop the run and field position," Heyward explained. "Some of the best offenses, they operate when they get to the 50. So like if we can get our offense in a good scoring position, it goes a long way going forward."
Instead of pointing fingers across the locker room, Heyward holds the front seven to a higher standard. Heading into a pivotal AFC North clash against the Cincinnati Bengals, the captain's message is clear - generating headline splash plays means little if gap discipline fails and the run defense falls short.
